Gain Line

The "Gain Line" is a rugby term referring to the imaginary line running parallel to the goal line through the center of a scrum, maul, or ruck. In a lineout, it refers to the line extending parallel to the goal line from the point where the ball is thrown in. Only by crossing this line does a team advance the ball and gain territory.
