You shot video — but it sits unused

Filming talks at an overseas conference despite weak English, adding subtitles, and bringing the learning home

This is the story of a company we produced video for. The company and the person are not named. The client has agreed to publication.

WhoA staff member at a company, in his late thirties, not confident in English
What they asked forShooting style "Capture an event", form "Try first" (a one-off). He filmed on site; we prepared him and did the editing and subtitles
What stayed with themA long video, short videos, and the footage
What we didPlanning, editing (Japanese subtitles)

What he heard at overseas conferences never made it back to the company

He was to attend an overseas conference (a large gathering).
The aim was to gather the latest information.
His English is weak, and he cannot follow everything that is said.
The last time, even with his notes, he could not pass it on to his colleagues.

The desk before the trip. How to bring home what he heard was not yet decided.

They decided to film, bring it home, and review it with subtitles

Before departure, he booked a 30-minute consultation.
The uses were set: sharing within the company, and his own review.
English talks would be reviewed with Japanese subtitles.

What to film: the talks and the venue.
Because he would film on site himself, the scenes and the camera settings were decided in advance.
With permission from the organiser and the speakers, he filmed only the talks he was allowed to.

The price was confirmed with an estimate before filming.
After his return, we edited the footage and added Japanese subtitles.

What stayed with them: a long video, short videos, and the footage

  • Long video: the recorded talks, with Japanese subtitles
  • Short videos: the key points, cut from the talks
  • Footage: the video and audio recorded on site

The company played the long video at its sharing session.
The short videos were used in an internal study meeting.
He reviewed what he had missed, reading the subtitles.

How the footage and the rights are handled is described in What you receive, and what stays with you.

Whether to continue was decided after using the video.

If this sounds like you, shall we talk for 30 minutes?

Even with weak English, filming and subtitles can bring the learning home.
